Santori (English spelling)

Japanese: サントリ（英語表記）santri

In the narrow sense, it refers to students studying at Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), but it is also used more broadly as a Javanese word to mean devout Muslims. Cultural anthropologist C. Geertz conceptualized it as one of the three religious traditions and cultural types of Java in Indonesia. That is, of the Javanese syncretism (mixed faith) that is made up of animistic, Hindu-Buddhist, and Islamic elements, this is a cultural type (or a human type from the perspective of the people who carry it) that emphasizes Islamic elements over the other elements.

狭義ではイスラム寄宿塾(プサントレン)で学ぶ学生を指すが，より広く，熱心なイスラム教徒の意にも用いられるジャワ語。これを文化人類学者C.ギアツが，インドネシアのジャワの三つの宗教的伝統･文化類型の一つとして概念化した。すなわち，アニミズム的要素，ヒンドゥー･仏教的要素，イスラム的要素からなるジャワのシンクレティズム(混交信仰)のうち，イスラム的要素を他の要素よりも強調する文化類型(担い手からいえば人間類型)がこれである。
