Spanish politician. Known as a theorist of federal republicanism, he translated and introduced the works of Proudhon into Spanish. Born in Barcelona, he moved to Madrid in 1847 and became involved in politics from 1854 onwards. In 1868 he founded the Federal Republican Party, became a member of the Spanish parliament, and in April 1873 became president of the First Republic, but resigned after only three months. After his death, his theories were put to use among left-wing nationalist forces in the Catalan region. [Suzuki Shoichi]

スペインの政治家。連邦共和国主義の理論家として知られ，プルードンの著作をスペイン語に訳し紹介した。バルセロナに生まれたが，1847年にマドリードへ移住し，54年以降政治活動に入った。68年には〈連邦共和国党〉を創立し，スペイン国会議員となり，73年4月に第一共和国大統領に就任したが，わずか3ヵ月で辞任した。死後，彼の理論はカタルニャ地方の左派ナショナリスト勢力の中で生かされていった。【鈴木昭一】
