1824‐1901 Spanish politician. Known as a theorist of federal republicanism, he translated and introduced the works of Proudhon into Spanish. Born in Barcelona, he moved to Madrid in 1847 and became involved in politics from 1854 onwards. In 1868 he founded the Federal Republican Party, became a member of the Spanish parliament, and in April 1873 became president of the First Republic, but resigned after only three months.
