...A species of prosimian endemic to Madagascar, it is part of the Indriidae family of primates along with the Sifaka and the Abahi (illustration). The name Indri comes from the French naturalist Pierre Sonnerat (1748-1814), who, upon encountering this monkey, mistook the locals for the animal's name when they shouted "Indri" (Look!). The local name is babakotou, etc.
