A town in Nishiokitama County in the southwest of Yamagata Prefecture. Its center is in the Oguni Basin upstream of the Arakawa River, and the Yonezaka Line runs through it. The surrounding vast mountainous area is rich in beech forests. There are heavy industry and chemical plants, and secondary industries are the main industries. Agriculture is centered on rice cultivation and beef cattle breeding. The area around Mt. Iide is part of Bandai-Asahi National Park. 737.56 km2 . Population 8,862 (2010).

A former town in Kariwa County, central Niigata Prefecture. The town produces rice and vegetables, mainly in the mountain basin in the middle reaches of the Shibumi River, a tributary of the Shinano River. In addition to sake brewing and lumbering, the town also cultivates shiitake mushrooms. Oguni paper is a local specialty. In April 2005, the town was incorporated into Nagaoka City along with Nakanoshima Town in Minamikanbara County, Koshi Town and Mishima Town in Mishima County, and Yamakoshi Village in Koshi County. Area: 86.15 km2 . Population: 7,222 (2003).

A town in Aso County, at the northern tip of Kumamoto Prefecture. It is centered in the Oguni Basin at the upper reaches of the Chikugo River, and its main settlement is Miyabaru. It is a forestry area following Hita in Oita Prefecture, and has been actively involved in lumbering and reforestation of Oguni cedar since the feudal era. It is also a prolific producer of shiitake mushrooms, and vegetable cultivation and livestock farming are also carried out. Tsuetate Onsen is home to the town. Area: 136.94 km2 . Population: 7,877 (2010).

熊本県北端,阿蘇郡の町。筑後川最上流の小国盆地が中心で,主集落は宮原(みやばる)。大分県の日田に続く林業地で,藩政時代からの小国杉の製材,植林が活発。シイタケも多産,野菜栽培,畜産も行う。杖立(つえたて)温泉がある。136.94km2。7877人(2010)。
