A city located in the central eastern part of Yamagata Prefecture, in the northern part of the Yamagata Basin. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. Tateoka, the city center, was built by the Maemori clan in the early 15th century. It became one of the centers of the Mogami region and prospered as a post station on the Ushu Kaido road and as a trading post for safflowers and hemp. The city is served by the Ou Main Line and National Route 13. It has extensive rice paddies and is a popular destination for fruit cultivation, including cherries, apples, and pears. It is close to Yamagata Airport and has an industrial complex that produces precision machinery. The area around Higashizawa Pond, built by wealthy farmer Kihayaemon, is now known as Higashizawa Rose Park, a famous rose garden. It was the birthplace of Mogami Tokunai, and there is a memorial hall there. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 196.98 ^km2 . 26,811 people (2010).

山形県中東部，山形盆地北部を占める市。1954年市制。中心市街の楯岡(たておか)は15世紀初頭前森氏が築城した地で，以後最上地方の一中心となり，羽州街道の宿駅，ベニバナや麻の集散で栄えた。奥羽本線，国道13号線が通じる。水田が広く，サクランボ，リンゴ，セイヨウナシなどの果樹栽培が盛ん。山形空港に近く，精密機械などの工業団地がある。豪農喜早伊右衛門が築いた東沢池付近はバラ園として著名な東沢バラ公園になっている。最上徳内の生地で，記念館がある。東日本大震災で，市内において被害が発生。196.98km²。２万6811人（2010）。
