In the early 20th century, EC Jeffrey divided vascular plants, which had previously been divided into cryptogams and flowering plants, into the macrophyllous plants Pteropsida and the microphyllous plants Lycopsida based on the difference between the leaves and the stele. Since then, the structure of the stele has been recognized as the most important character for the classification of vascular plants.
