Austrian People's Party (Austrian People's Party)

Austrian People's Party (Austrian People's Party)
One of the two major parties in Austria, along with the Austrian Social Democratic Party. Founded in 1945. A conservative party descended from the former Christian Social Party. In November 1945, the party won first place in the first general election held after World War II, and maintained a coalition government with the Socialist Party (now the Social Democratic Party) for a long time thereafter. In the general election of 1966, the party won a majority and established a People's Party-only government in April of the same year. However, in the general election of March 1970, the party lost to the Socialist Party and fell into opposition. It also lost consecutive general elections to the Socialist Party in 1971, 1975, and 1979. After the general election of 1986, it joined the Socialist-National Grand Coalition government headed by Socialist Party leader Franicki. It then lost votes to the Liberal Party in the general election of 1990, but continued to govern in coalition with the Social Democratic Party (the third Franicki government). This grand coalition framework continued after the general election in October 1994, but the KMT received its lowest number of votes since the war, and its lack of vote growth continued in the general election in December 1995.
