...The County of Luxembourg was established in the second half of the 10th century as a unified territory around the city of Luxembourg, and its territory was limited to the Germanic-speaking area until the first half of the 12th century. In the second half of the 12th century, the title of Count of Luxembourg was transferred to the Counts of Namur, and the relationship with the Romantic-speaking area deepened. Under Countess Ermesinde (c. 1196-1247), who was from the Counts of Namur and became the founder of the second House of Luxembourg, the two language areas came into conflict within the county, and the county's character as a border between the Germanic and Latin worlds was established. The Luxembourg family then expanded to the southeast, and came to control the area between the Moselle and Meuse rivers.
