…1786-87 was a peasant rebellion in western Massachusetts, USA. The economic depression after independence exacerbated the hardships of heavy taxes and debts on small farmers in western Massachusetts, who had little cash income. They petitioned the state assembly for tax relief, postponement of enforcement of overdue taxes and debts, relief for those imprisoned for debts, and an increase in the issuance of legal tender. However, the assembly adjourned in July 1786 without taking any measures. About 500 disgruntled western farmers gathered in Springfield under the command of Daniel Shays (1748-1825), a demobilized farmer, and prevented the Supreme Court from opening and attempted to occupy the arsenal. The rebellion then spread to farmers in neighboring states. …
