An old town in Asakura County in the central south of Fukuoka Prefecture. The southwestern part is a rice paddy area on the right bank of the Chikugo River, and the northeastern part is hilly. This rural area produces a lot of rice, wheat, persimmons, and vegetables, and is passed through by National Route 386. It is home to the remains of the Asakura Imperial Palace, where Empress Saimei is said to have died, and the remains of a checkpoint on the Dazaifu government road. In March 2006, it was incorporated as a city by merging with Amagi City and Haki Town, Asakura County. 34.56 km2 . Population: 10,392 (2003). 福岡県中南部,朝倉郡の旧町。南西部は筑後川右岸の水田地帯,北東部は丘陵地。米麦,カキ,野菜を多産する農村地域で,国道386号線が通じる。斉明天皇が没したと伝える朝倉行宮跡,大宰府官道の関所跡がある。2006年3月,甘木市,朝倉郡杷木町と合併し市制,朝倉市となる。34.56km2。1万392人(2003)。
