Asakura [town] - Asakura
An old town in Asakura County in the central south of Fukuoka Prefecture. The southwestern part is a rice paddy area on the right bank of the Chikugo River, and the northeastern part is hilly. This rural area produces a lot of rice, wheat, persimmons, and vegetables, and is passed through by National Route 386. It is home to the remains of the Asakura Imperial Palace, where Empress Saimei is said to have died, and the remains of a checkpoint on the Dazaifu government road. In March 2006, it was incorporated as a city by merging with Amagi City and Haki Town, Asakura County. 34.56 km2 . Population: 10,392 (2003).
