Jeffersonian Democracy

...Militarianism, or the opposition to standing armies, was the central doctrine of American republicanism. The importance of this symbol of republicanism in America is also shown by the fact that T. Jefferson, who created an era known historically as Jeffersonian Democracy, never called his own position democratic but republican. However, unlike Madison, he did not consider republicanism to be an aristocratic modification of democracy, but rather considered it to be rule by representatives with limited powers, closer to forced delegation, in opposition to monarchy and oligarchy.
