…In his inaugural lecture, he advocated the establishment of a science of history based on rigorous criticism of historical sources, and left a decisive mark on the establishment of modern history in England. He published the still authoritative Selected Sources on the Constitutional History of England (1870), and then wrote his major work, the three-volume History of the English Constitution (1873-78), which showed the direction of historical research. He also edited the nine volumes and 19 books of the Rawls Series, the result of a national project to compile historical sources. …
