Jerónimo de Mendieta

Jerónimo de Mendieta
1525‐1604
A Spanish Franciscan monk who traveled to New Spain (Mexico) in 1554, mastered the local Nahuatl language so perfectly that "everyone around him was amazed," and devoted himself to missionary work. Among the Franciscans who arrived at their post shortly after the conquest, there was a strong utopian ideal of realizing a truly Christian society in the New World, and Mendieta was one of those who deeply resonated with this ideal. A man of letters, he often wrote numerous letters on behalf of his colleagues to the King of Spain and those in charge of colonial administration, in which he pointed out in an unreserved tone the mistakes and shortcomings of the policies toward the natives, and harshly criticized the injustice and tyranny of the general colonists.
