Italian composer, organist and harpsichordist of the early Baroque period. Born around September 15th in Ferrara, a cultural city in northern Italy, he studied under the local court organist Luzzaschi, but was also influenced by Gesualdo, who stayed there from 1594 to 1596. He probably went to Rome with his teacher Luzzaschi in 1601, where he worked as an organist and singer, and in 1607 he became the organist at the Church of Santa Maria in Trastevere, but in the same year he traveled to Brussels with his patron Bentivoglio. From 1608 until his death on March 1, 1643, he worked as an organist at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, where he gained fame. He also served at the court of Cardinal Aldobrandini. Among his many works, his toccatas (1615) are particularly known as a work that conveys his virtuosity. His Ricercare (1615) and Canzone (1623) are also important, but his Fiori Musicali (Bouquet of Music) (1635) had a great influence on later German musicians, including Bach.
