Since the end of the Heian period, a trend in Buddhist thought that sought to overcome the idea of the Latter Days of the Law led to the revival of new Buddhism and Nara Buddhism by the mid-Kamakura period. New Buddhism included Pure Land Buddhism, with Honen founding the Jodo sect, Shinran founding the Jodo Shinshu sect, Ippen founding the Jishu sect, and Nichiren founding the Nichiren sect, spreading faith to many. The monks Eisai and Dogen, who returned to Japan, founded the Rinzai and Soto sects of Zen Buddhism, attracting faith mainly from the samurai class. On the other hand, in Nara Buddhism, active figures emerged such as Koben of the Kegon sect, Shunjo of the Ritsu sect, who restored Sennō-ji Temple, and Eison and Ninsho, who launched a relief project for non-humans and lepers.
