…The mid-19th century produced many writers who would later become classics in Denmark and abroad, including the master storyteller and pioneer of dialect literature, the literary critic Heiber, Hans Christian Andersen, immortal as the founder of fairy tale literature, the speculative satirist Frederik Paludan-Müller (1809-76), the literary thinker Kierkegaard, and Meïr Aron Goldschmidt (1819-87), who enriched Danish literature with Jewish elements. In the 1970s, the literary critic Brandes introduced French and British naturalism, which gave birth to the atheist Jacobsen, Sophus Schandorph (1836-1901), who excelled in psychological depiction, and the “modern conversionists” such as Drachmann and Gjellerup for a time.
