…The mid-19th century produced many writers who would later become classics in Denmark and abroad, including the master storyteller and pioneer of dialect literature, the literary critic Heiber, Hans Christian Andersen, immortal as the founder of fairy tale literature, the speculative satirist Frederik Paludan-Müller (1809-76), the literary thinker Kierkegaard, and Meïr Aron Goldschmidt (1819-87), who enriched Danish literature with Jewish elements. In the 1970s, the literary critic Brandes introduced French and British naturalism, which gave birth to the atheist Jacobsen, Sophus Schandorph (1836-1901), who excelled in psychological depiction, and the “modern conversionists” such as Drachmann and Gjellerup for a time. Pontoppidan, who received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1917 along with Gjellerup, aimed for the liberation of the individual in his own way. …

…19世紀半ばは後にデンマーク内外で古典となる文人が多数輩出するが，物語の名手で方言文学の先駆者ブリッカー，文芸評論家ハイベア，童話文学の確立者として不朽のアンデルセン，思弁的風刺家パルダン･メルラーFrederik Paludan‐Müller(1809‐76)，文人思想家のキルケゴール，ユダヤ要素でデンマーク文学を豊かにしたゴルスメトMeïr Aron Goldschmidt(1819‐87)らはその一部である。70年代にフランス･イギリス型の自然主義が文芸批評家ブランデスによって導入され，彼は心理描写にすぐれた無神論者ヤコブセン，シャーンドーフSophus Schandorph(1836‐1901)，一時期のドラクマンやギェレループらの〈現代転換派〉を世に出した。ギェレループとともに1917年ノーベル文学賞を受けたポントピダンは独自に個性の解放を目ざした。…
