This historic "Oberhausen Manifesto" became the starting point of the "New German Cinema." Alexander Kluge (1932- ), Peter Schamoni, Edgar Reitz and others were at the center of the group, and they argued that "new freedom" was necessary to create new German films, and they demanded that the government and film companies open the door to new directors, provide financial support and guarantees for debut films, and open film schools to nurture new talent. In response, the federal government strengthened its support for the film industry, which in turn led to enthusiastic support for film production by television stations, the modernization of movie theaters (later remodeled into new small theaters called cinéma complexes in French) to attract younger audiences, and the opening of film schools (the University of Film and Television (HFF) was founded in Munich and the German Film and Television Academy (DFFB) was founded in Berlin between 1966 and 1968). These policies proved effective, leading to the founding of the Young German Film Committee in 1965, which in fact created the conditions for some members of the Oberhausen Group to begin producing feature films. *Some of the terminology that mentions "Schamoni, U." is listed below.
