Akastos (English spelling)

Athenian politician. Date of birth and death unknown. He is thought to have lived in the mid-8th century BCE, when Athens was assumed to have become a polis state. He is thought to have been the first Athenian to become an archon (highest official) in place of the king during the transition from monarchy to aristocracy, and is considered the first Athenian with a confirmed historical presence, as the nine archons of the classical period swore "I will take an oath as in the time of Acastus" when assuming their post.
