Roman Emperor. Reigned 375-392. Son of Valentinian I. Enthroned at the age of four, he was given rule over Illyricum, Africa, and Italy. He established his court in Milan and was under the guardianship of his mother Justina and the Frankish officer Bout. In 387 he was driven out of Italy by the usurper Maximus, but the following year Theodosius I defeated the usurper and restored him to the throne. He was subsequently under the guardianship of the Frankish general Arbogast in Gaul, but died in 392. Opinions are divided as to whether he committed suicide or was murdered by Arbogast.

ローマ皇帝。在位375‐392年。ウァレンティニアヌス1世の子。4歳で帝位に擁立され，イリュリクム，アフリカ，イタリアの支配権を与えられる。ミラノに宮廷を置き，母ユスティナやフランク人将校バウトの後見を受けた。387年簒奪帝マクシムスにイタリアを追われたが，翌年テオドシウス1世が簒奪帝を倒して復位。以後ガリアでフランク人将軍アルボガストの後見を受けたが，392年に死去。自殺かアルボガストによる殺害かは，意見が分かれている。
