371‐392 Roman Emperor. Reigned 375-392. Son of Valentinian I. Enthroned at the age of four, he was given rule over Illyricum, Africa, and Italy. He established his court in Milan and was under the guardianship of his mother Justina and the Frankish officer Bout. In 387 he was driven out of Italy by the usurper Maximus, but the following year Theodosius I defeated the usurper and restored him to the throne. He was subsequently under the guardianship of the Frankish general Arbogast in Gaul, but died in 392. Opinions are divided as to whether he committed suicide or was murdered by Arbogast.
