1858‐1929 Austrian chemist. His real name was Carl Auer, Baron Welsbach. He was born in Vienna and graduated from the Technical University there. He began his research on rare earth elements under RW Bunsen in Heidelberg from 1880 to 1882, and devoted his life to that research. The rare earth element didymium was predicted to be a mixture of two elements, but in 1885 he succeeded in separating them, naming them praseodymium and neodymium. In 1907, he separated ytterbium and lutetium independently with G. Urbain. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
