...The revival of exploration trips and the development of printing including illustrations were the driving forces behind this movement, and the introduction of rare plants and animals from America that were not found in the Old World further stimulated the movement. New natural history atlases such as C. von Gesner's "Historia della Fauna", the collected works of his successor U. Aldrovandi, J. Jonston's "Pictorial Book of Birds, Animals and Fishes", and Albert Seba's (1665-1736) "Catalogue of Specimens in the Collection" all switched to copying actual specimens. However, during this period, many counterfeit specimens of monsters, including dragons, were sold, and as a result, it was impossible to escape the spell of medieval monsterology. ...
