American critic and novelist. Graduated from the University of Wisconsin Graduate School. Professor at the State University of New York since 1965. His works include the critical trilogy Love and Death in the American Novel (1960, revised edition 1966), a "literary anthropology" trilogy that drew on depth psychology and cultural anthropology to pay attention to popular literature, which had not previously been given much attention; Waiting for the End (1964), The Return of the Vanishing American (1968), What Was Literature? (1982), as well as novels and short story collections such as Freaks: Myths and Images of the Secret Self (1978), Being Busted (1970), which was based on his experience of being arrested on suspicion of marijuana possession, and The Second Stone (1963).

Fiedler, Konrad Adolf

Died June 3, 1895, Munich. German art scholar. He studied law and became a lawyer, but traveled to Italy, Greece, Egypt, and other places. In 1866, he met H. Mareth in Rome, and in 1872 he and A. Hildebrand joined him and lived together in a monastery on the outskirts of Florence. In 1876, he returned to Berlin, and later moved to Munich. In opposition to the Hegelian interpretation of art history and the French-style sociological view of art history, he advocated the "development of pure vision." His main work was On the Origin of Artistic Activity (Über den Ursprung der Künstlerischen Tätigkeit) (1887).

ドイツの芸術学者。法律を学び弁護士となったが，イタリア，ギリシア，エジプトなど各地を旅行し，1866年にはローマで H.マレースを知り，72年より A.ヒルデブラントを加えてフィレンツェ郊外の修道院で共同生活をおくった。 76年にはベルリンに戻り，のちミュンヘンに移った。ヘーゲリズムにおける芸術史の解釈，あるいはフランス風の社会学的芸術史観に対して，「純粋視覚の発展」を説いた。主著『芸術的活動の起源について』 Über den Ursprung der Künstlerischen Tätigkeit (1887) 。
