Kaneyama's Secret Plan

Japanese: 兼山秘策 - けんざんひさく

The brothers Aoji Kaneyama and Reizei, Confucian scholars in Kanazawa, compiled letters sent to them by their mentor Kyusu, and circulated throughout the world as "Kaneyama Reizei's Secret Plans." It contains letters from 1711-31 (1711-1731, the 1st year of Shotoku-16 of Kyoho). There are eight volumes in total. It is a valuable resource that directly conveys Kyusu's scholarship and thought, and the contents cover a wide range of topics, including the shogunate government of the time, rumors in Edo, public opinion, and friendships, giving insight into the social situation in the Shotoku and Kyoho periods and the author's opinions on them. 金沢の儒者青地兼山，麗沢兄弟がその師室鳩巣から寄せられた書簡を編んだもので《兼山麗沢秘策》として世上に流布した。1711‐31年(正徳1‐享保16)の書簡を収める。全8冊。鳩巣の学問，思想を直接伝える貴重な資料であるが，その内容は当時の幕政，江戸市中の風聞，世評，交友関係等多方面にわたっており，正徳･享保期の社会情勢と，それに対する著者の意見がうかがえる。《日本経済大典》所収。【桂島宣弘】
