Shakushain's Battle - Shakushain's Battle

Shakushain's Battle - Shakushain's Battle
The largest Ainu uprising in modern times occurred in 1669 against the rule of the Matsumae clan. During a dispute over fishing and hunting territories between the Hae Ainu and Shibuchari Ainu of eastern and western Ezo, the latter's chief Shakushain issued an anti-Japanese (Shamo) and anti-Matsumae clan rally to the Ainu of both eastern and western Ezo. The Ainu of Shiranuka in the east and Mashike in the west rose up in unison (the Ishikari Ainu did not participate), attacking Japanese merchant ships and Takamachi. The shogunate was deeply shocked and exercised its command authority, ordering Matsumae Yasuhiro (a hatamoto), a member of the Matsumae clan, and the Tsugaru Hirosaki clan to send in troops. In October 1669, Shakushain was assassinated by a cunning plot by the Matsumae army, and the uprising was finally put down in 1671. The root causes of this uprising were the establishment of the Matsumae Domain by the Wajin, who had established control over the southwestern part of Ezo (present-day southern Hokkaido), and the harsh exploitation of the Ainu and the destruction of their fishing and hunting grounds during the establishment of the domain and the development of its government. → Battle of Koshamain → Related topics Commercial area | Battle of Kunashiri and Menashi
