... When cities were first established, they were often the sites of festivals linked to the city, and there are examples of legends of saints who became the objects of people's worship. For example, Sebaldus (feast day: August 19th), who is said to have been born in the 11th century as a Danish prince, gave up his wealth and status to live as a hermit in the forests near Nuremberg, where he performed many miracles, attracting many followers and causing Nuremberg to develop as a place of pilgrimage. Sebaldus is thus considered the patron saint of Nuremberg, but this was also a legend that was created later. ...

… The town was first mentioned in documents in 1050, the year King Henry III held court there. Around 1070, the number of pilgrims to the tomb of Sebaldus, who later became a saint (1424), increased, and this is thought to have been the beginning of the prosperity of the town of Nuremberg. It is believed that a marketplace existed here as early as the 11th century. …
