Japanese film. 1965 (Showa 40) directed by Kurosawa Akira. In the early 1960s, Kurosawa released a string of hit entertainment films, including "Yojimbo" (1961) and "Tsubaki Sanjuro" (1962), but this final film could be considered the culmination of Kurosawa's work. It depicts the struggles of Niikyoujo (played by Mifune Toshiro), the director of a sanatorium (relief hospital) in Koishikawa at the end of the Edo period, as he battles the illnesses of the poor and the ignorance of society. It was the biggest hit of 1964 and was ranked number one in Kinema Junpo's Top Ten. Based on the contrast between the lifestyles and thoughts of Sasada and Yasumoto Noboru (Kayama Yuzo, 1937-), a young doctor who has returned from Nagasaki, the story is layered by depicting the patients at the sanatorium in a grand hotel format (a technique in which the dramas of many characters intertwine in one place), and the elaborate sets and tempo of the music and images give it a sense of weight. It is a work full of humanism with a message that medicine is a compassionate art, but it also has strong didactic nuances. There is a strong intention to counter the bandwagon-like television programs of the high economic growth era, but it also shows some slightly old-fashioned values ​​such as patriarchal authoritarianism. While it was recommended as an example of the "ideal human image" in the 1966 Central Council for Education report, it was met with criticism that it was a return to conservatism, and reviews were divided.

日本映画。1965年（昭和40）作品。黒澤明(くろさわあきら)監督。1960年代前半に黒澤監督は、『用心棒』（1961）、『椿三十郎(つばきさんじゅうろう)』（1962）など、エンターテインメント作品を連打してヒットさせたが、その最後を飾る本作は黒澤映画の集大成ともいえよう。江戸末期、小石川にあった養生所（救済病院）の所長、新出去定(にいできょじょう)（三船敏郎(みふねとしろう)）が、貧しい人々の病気と社会の無知とを相手に奮闘するさまを描き、1964年のベストヒットを記録し、キネマ旬報ベストテン第1位となった。去定と長崎帰りの若い医師・保本登(やすもとのぼる)（加山雄三(かやまゆうぞう)、1937―　）の生き方や考え方の対比を軸に、グランド・ホテル形式（ある場所を舞台に多くの人物のドラマを交錯させる手法）で養生所の患者たちを描き出してストーリーを重層化し、凝ったセットをはじめ、音楽や映像のテンポにも重量感を出した。医は仁術というメッセージとともにヒューマニズムあふれる作品だが、教訓的なニュアンスも濃い。高度経済成長のバンドワゴン（お囃子(はやし)連中）的なテレビ番組に対抗する意図が濃厚だが、家父長的な権威主義など、やや古い価値観も顔をのぞかせる。1966年の中央教育審議会答申「期待される人間像」の例として推奨される一方、保守回帰と反発されて評価が割れた。
