1133‐1213 Armenian thinker and codifier. Also known as Mekhitar Gosh. Born in Ganzak, he studied in Eastern Armenia and Cilicia. With the support of the ruler Zakarian family, he founded the Norgetic monastery and established a college there. The Code of Mkhitar Gosh, which he compiled in 1184, consisting of two parts, church law and secular law, became the main source of Armenian law thereafter. While supporting the feudal system from a legal perspective, it also restricted the arbitrary use of feudal lords against peasants. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
