Nakagawa Canal

Japanese: 中川運河 - なかがわうんが
Nakagawa Canal

Located in the central-southern part of Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture, this canal is the city's largest, linking Nagoya Port and Nagoya Station. It is 10.3 kilometers long, 36 to 91 meters wide, and 1 to 3 meters deep; it was excavated as a lock canal from the old Nakagawa River. Construction began in 1926 (Taisho 15) and was completed in October 1930 (Showa 5), at a cost of 18.86 million yen. There are two locks, at Nakagawaguchi and Matsushige, and three boat docks, at Hori-dome, Nakagawaguchi, and Matsushige. Small and medium-sized factories and warehouses, including lumber factories and metal and machinery factories, are lined up in a strip along the canal.

The middle part of the old Nakagawa River was called Oisegawa River, and the part from Atsuta Shinden East Group to the river mouth was called Nakagawa River. The Oisegawa River was used as a drainage channel for bad water, and there were the Oisegawa Bad Water Well Group and the Oisegawa Shinboriwari Well Group.
