Jean Brunhes

French geographer. He studied under Vidal de la Brache at the École Normale Supérieure and further developed his views. He was an unusual figure, eloquent and sociable, and in his later years he became a banker. He was initially interested in topography and geology, and his research attitude was natural science-oriented. After serving as professor of physical geography at the University of Fribourg (1896), he was invited to become professor at the Collège de France (1912), and his interest in social reality deepened around the time. His doctoral thesis, Studies on Irrigation in the Mediterranean Countries (1902), also addressed legal aspects, and his Human Geography (1910) attempted to classify specific human activities.

フランスの地理学者。エコール･ノルマル･シュペリウールでビダル･ド･ラ･ブラーシュに学び，その立場を発展させた。雄弁で社交的で，晩年は銀行家になるなど異色の存在である。初めは地形学や地質学に関心が深く，研究態度は自然科学的であった。フリブール大学自然地理学教授(1896)を経てコレージュ･ド･フランスの教授(1912)に招かれる前後から社会的現実への関心が深まる。学位論文《地中海諸国の灌漑研究》(1902)は法的な側面をもとらえ，《人文地理学》(1910)は具体的な人間活動の分類を試みる。
