Karakogikaede - Karakogikaede

Japanese:
Karakogikaede - Karakogikaede

A deciduous shrub or small tree of the maple family (APG classification: Sapindaceae). The leaves grow opposite one another, with three shallow or moderate lobes or no lobes, and irregular coarse sawtooth edges. It is found in the mountain wetlands of Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. The basic species, Korean Karakogi maple, is found from Korea to northeastern China, and its leaves, rich in tannins, are used to dye cotton gray-black with iron mordant. "Karakogi" is a corruption of "kanokogi" (kanoko tree), describing the kanoko-like bark.
