Inscribed - Inscribed

This term is used in a variety of ways in contrast to circumscribing. First, when two circles share a single point and one circle is inside the other, the former is said to be inscribed in the latter. When a common tangent is drawn between two circles and the two circles are on the opposite sides of the tangent, the tangent is called the common intangent. When two spheres share a single point and one sphere is inside the other, the former is said to be inscribed in the latter. Next, when all the edges of a polygon are tangent to a single circle, the circle is called the inscribed circle of the polygon, and the polygon is called the circumscribed polygon of the circle. On the other hand, when all the vertices of a polygon are on the circumference of a single circle, the circle is called the circumscribed circle of the polygon, and the polygon is said to be inscribed in the circle.

When all of the faces of a polyhedron are in contact with a sphere, the polyhedron is called a circumscribing polyhedron of a sphere, and the sphere is called an inscribing sphere of the polyhedron. When all of the vertices of a polyhedron are on a sphere, the sphere is called a circumscribing sphere of the polyhedron, and the polyhedron is called an inscribing polyhedron.

この用語は外接と対をなして多様な意味に用いられる。まず、二つの円がただ1点を共有し一方の円が他方の内部にあるとき、前者は後者に内接しているという。また、2円に共通な接線が引けて2円がその接線の反対側にあるとき、その接線を共通内接線という。二つの球についても、2球がただ1点を共有し一方の球が他方の内部にあるとき、前者は後者に内接しているという。次に、多角形の各辺がすべて一つの円に接しているとき、その円を多角形の内接円といい、多角形をその円の外接多角形という。一方、多角形の各頂点がすべて一つの円周上にあるとき、その円を多角形の外接円といい、多角形はその円に内接するという。

　多面体についても、各面がすべて一つの球に接するとき、その多面体を球の外接多面体、その球を多面体の内接球という。多面体のすべての頂点がすべて一つの球面上にあるとき、その球を多面体の外接球、多面体を内接多面体という。
