In addition to the show trials of former opposition leaders, party members loyal to Stalin also fell victim to the reign of terror. These included party officials who had been loyal to Stalin in criticizing the opposition and collectivizing the party in the 1920s, such as Pavel P. Postyshev (1887-1939), Stanislav V. Kosior (1889-1939), and Yan E. Rudzutak (1887-1938), as well as influential party officials from local regions, such as Iosif M. Vareikis (1894-1939) and Boris P. Sheboldaev (1895-1937). At the 20th Party Congress (1956), Khrushchev revealed that 98 of the 139 Central Committee members and candidates at the 17th Party Congress were shot in 1937-38.
