A ruler is a measuring instrument that measures length using graduations on a long, thin stick, board, string, or tape; it is a familiar tool for measuring length in everyday life. The history of rulers is extremely ancient. There are examples of rulers being used in India as far back as 3000 BCE. They have been in use for a long time, but their history lies in the size of the graduations. The basis of length in the ancient Orient was the cubit (approximately 50 cm), which began with the elbow length, while in China it is the shaku (approximately 18 cm), which began with the handbreadth.

ものさしは細長い棒や板あるいは紐やテープに目盛をつけて，その目盛で長さをはかる計量器で，日常生活で長さをはかる道具として身近にある長さ計である。　ものさしの歴史はきわめて古い。インドにおいて前3000年にものさしを使用した例がある。長い間使用してきているが，目盛間隔の大きさにその歴史がある。古代オリエントにおける長さの基礎はひじの長さに始まるキュビト(約50cm)で，中国では手幅に始まる尺(約18cm)である。
