...The Chinese name is Hiren. The English name cockroach is an anglicized version of the Spanish word cucaracha, and a similar variant is asparagus being used as sparrow grass. In America, the German cockroach is called the Croton bug, but Croton is the name of the river that became the source of water for New York City in 1842, and the cockroaches began to increase in number around the time the river was created, hence the name.
