The capital of northern New Mexico in the United States. Population 56,000 (1990). Located at 36 degrees north latitude, it is on a plateau at an altitude of 2,100 meters (the highest of any state capital in the United States), and the dry climate makes it comfortable in the summer. Founded by the Spanish in 1610 as the base for the New Mexico colony, it became a center of missionary and trade. The name of the city means "sacred faith" in Spanish. Trade with American merchants flourished from 1821 onwards, and as a result of the Mexican-American War in 1848, it became a US territory, and in 1880 the Santa Fe Railroad was extended to this point.

The capital of the province of the same name in central Argentina. Population 342,796 (1991). Facing the Paraná River, it is a distribution center and shipping port for agricultural products from the Pampas. It is connected to the city of Paraná on the opposite bank by a tunnel. In addition to food processing, it has textile and automobile manufacturing industries. It was founded in 1573 by Juan de Garay, who came from Asuncion, Paraguay, but moved to its current location in 1650 to avoid attacks by natives. In 1662 it became an official port under Spanish colonial rule, and as a major port on the Paraná River, it became bustling with trade with matechas.

アメリカ合衆国ニューメキシコ州北部の州都。人口5万6000(1990)。北緯36゜に位置するが，標高2100m(合衆国の州都中もっとも高い)の高原にあり，乾燥しているため夏は快適である。1610年，スペイン人がニューメキシコ植民地の拠点として建設，伝道，交易の中心地となった。地名はスペイン語で〈神聖なる信仰〉を意味する。1821年以降サンタ･フェ街道を利用してのアメリカ商人との交易が栄え，48年には米墨戦争の結果アメリカ領となり，80年にはサンタ･フェ鉄道がここまで延長された。

アルゼンチン中部，同名州の州都。人口34万2796(1991)。パラナ川に面し，パンパの農産物の集散地，積出港。対岸のパラナ市とはトンネルで結ばれている。食品加工に加え繊維･自動車製造業などがある。パラグアイのアスンシオンから来たフアン･デ･ガライにより1573年に創設されたが，原住民の襲撃を避けるため，1650年現地点に移った。62年スペイン植民地下の公認港となり，パラナ川の主要港としてマテチャ貿易でにぎわった。
