Also called the flexor reflex. A reflex in which the flexor muscles of a limb contract when the skin of the limb is stimulated strong enough to cause injury. One of the basic reflex forms of vertebrates with limbs. When a limb is stimulated, the flexor muscles contract reflexively through the pathway of sensory receptors - sensory nerves - spinal motor nerves - muscles. If the stimulus is strong, the reflex spreads to the entire flexor muscles of that limb, resulting in a coordinated flexion movement, with several joints all bending and folding toward the trunk. This reflex helps to escape harm, so it is also called an escape reflex, defensive reflex, or nociceptive reflex. In addition, because it is a reflex that begins in the receptors on the skin, it is also called a cutaneous reflex or extrinsic reflex.
