…After serving as a private lecturer at the University of Königsberg (1863-66), he was appointed to a private psychiatric hospital in Görlitz, where he later became its director (1867). He called attention to the state, course and outcome of psychiatric disorders, and proposed the concepts of symptom complex and disease type. Catatonia, hymenorrhea, hymenoid syndrome, and nervosa were all named by him, but catatonia in particular, along with hymenorrhea, which he had his student E. Hecker describe, was the precursor to Kraepelin's concept of dementia praecox. …
