1911‐ A novelist regarded as a leading figure in Egyptian literature. Born near the Hussein Mosque in Old Cairo, he graduated from the Department of Philosophy at Egypt University (now Cairo University). Since publishing his debut novel, Madness's Murmurs (1938), he has steadily produced powerful works to this day. His true talent can be seen in many of his works set in Cairo's downtown area, and his trilogy, all named after Cairo's downtown areas, of which Baina al-Kasrayne (1956, translated into Japanese) is the first part, is considered a monumental work in the history of Arab literature.
