A novelist regarded as a leading figure in Egyptian literature. Born near the Hussein Mosque in Old Cairo, he graduated from the Department of Philosophy at Egypt University (now Cairo University). Since publishing his debut novel, Madness's Murmurs (1938), he has steadily produced powerful works to this day. His true talent can be seen in many of his works set in Cairo's downtown area, and his trilogy, all named after Cairo's downtown areas, of which Baina al-Kasrayne (1956, translated into Japanese) is the first part, is considered a monumental work in the history of Arab literature.

エジプト文壇の第一人者と目される小説家。カイロ旧市街のフサイン･モスクの近くに生まれる。エジプト大学(現，カイロ大学)の哲学科を卒業した。処女作《狂気のつぶやき》(1938)を発表して以来，今日に至るまで着々と力作を創作し続けている。カイロの下町を舞台にした多くの作品に彼の真骨頂がみられ，《バイナ･アルカスライン》(1956。邦訳あり)を第1部とし，いずれもカイロの下町の名を題名とした長編三部作は，アラブ文学史上記念碑的大作とされている。
