Kiritanpo

Japanese:
Kiritanpo

A local dish from Akita Prefecture. Non-glutinous rice is cooked, pounded in a mortar, spread around thin bamboo sticks, and grilled over charcoal. In the Edo period, when hunters and woodcutters would go into the mountains for several days, they would grill the surface of the rice balls to make them yakimusubi (grilled rice balls) so that their portable lunches would last longer. In the late Edo period, the feudal lord of the time was coming to Hanawa near Odate on a patrol, so as a form of entertainment, they would smear rice around a small cedar stick, cut off one end of the stick, sharpen the other end, and grill it by sticking it into the ashes of a hearth. The feudal lord praised the taste and asked what it was called, but it was an original creation and had no name. Someone quickly answered, "kiritanpo," because it resembled the shape of a short-tipped spear with one end cut off. It is said that the name came into use from then on. Originally, it was not added to shottsuru nabe (hot pot), but now it is used as an ingredient in this famous hot pot dish. There are many different ways to cook kiritanpo, and it is now mass-produced, but it was a restaurant in Noshiro in the early Showa period that first began selling it as a product.
