An ancient Greek historian and geographer. Born in Miletus in Asia Minor. After epic and lyric poetry were born in Greece, he was one of the earliest of the "logopoei" (prose poets) who wrote in prose, a style of expression that was free from the constraints of poetic rhythm. His mythological works are known as the Genealogy and Histories, and his geographical works are known as the Geography and Voyages Around the World. He traveled around many countries and described the customs, culture, and geography of the various peoples, becoming a forerunner of Herodotus. He also worked on the rational tradition of the Milesian School, improving Anaximander's maps.
