A series of fairy tales by Hugh Lofting, a British-born American fairy tale writer. From The Story of Dr. Dolittle (1920) to the posthumous Dr. Dolittle's Puddleby Adventures (53), the author illustrated the 12-volume series. When the author served in World War I, he was heartbroken to see wounded military horses being shot, and came up with the idea of a doctor and naturalist named Dr. Dolittle who could understand the language of animals. The humorous and heartwarming stories, featuring animals with unique personalities such as Polynesia the parrot, Zip the dog, Dabu-Dab the duck, and Gabu-Gabu the pig, are loved by adults as well. In Japan, the series is known for the excellent translation by Ibuse Masuji. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
