A series of fairy tales by Hugh Lofting, a British-born American fairy tale writer. From The Story of Dr. Dolittle (1920) to the posthumous Dr. Dolittle's Puddleby Adventures (53), the author illustrated the 12-volume series. When the author served in World War I, he was heartbroken to see wounded military horses being shot, and came up with the idea of a doctor and naturalist named Dr. Dolittle who could understand the language of animals. The humorous and heartwarming stories, featuring animals with unique personalities such as Polynesia the parrot, Zip the dog, Dabu-Dab the duck, and Gabu-Gabu the pig, are loved by adults as well. In Japan, the series is known for the excellent translation by Ibuse Masuji.

イギリス生れのアメリカの童話作家ヒュー・ロフティングの一連の童話集。『ドリトル先生アフリカゆき』 The Story of Dr. Dolittle (1920) から死後出版の『ドリトル先生の楽しい家』 Dr. Dolittle's Puddleby Adventures (53) まで，作者が挿絵も描いた 12冊のシリーズ。作者は第1次世界大戦に従軍した際，傷ついた軍馬が銃殺されるのを見て心を痛め，動物の言葉がわかる医者で博物学者のドリトル先生なる人物を思いついたという。おうむのポリネシア，犬のジップ，あひるのダブダブ，豚のガブガブなど，個性豊かな動物たちも登場し，ユーモラスで心あたたまる作品として，おとなにも親しまれている。日本では井伏鱒二の名訳で知られる。
