Year of death: May 16, 1934 Year of birth: April 26, 1852 (June 13, 1852) A Western-style painter of the Meiji period. Born in Edo. His pen name was Tokido. In 1863 he studied English at Kaisei-sho, and later painting under Kawakami Togai and others. In 1871 he went to America on a scholarship from the Tokugawa family, and in 1873 he moved to Paris to study oil painting under de Carias. The following year he moved to Venice and entered art school. His works during his study abroad include "Girl," which already show his skilled brushwork. In 1881 he returned to Japan and worked for a time at the Printing Bureau of the Ministry of Finance, after which he taught pupils such as Tojo Shotaro at his home. He participated in the founding of the Meiji Art Association, but after the association was dissolved he joined the founding of the Tomoe Society, which was centered around his pupils. After returning to Japan, his works include "Katami no Hitatare" (Tokyo National Museum), and in the latter half of his life he showed a stronger Japanese tendency.
