...The corsets that tightened the torsos of today's French doll models created this figure, but around this time the negative effects of corsets were also pointed out. Already in Marie Antoinette's time, the German physician Sömmering von Sömmering warned that corsets constricted the lower rib cage and put pressure on the internal organs (1785). After the French Revolution, corsets fell out of fashion and women's torsos were spared from pressure, but they became fashionable again when the monarchy was restored, and corsets with whalebone or metal frames became popular.
