A town in central Germany, 34km west of Bamberg, Bavaria. Population 1,700 (1971). Former site of a Cistercian monastery. The first Cistercian monastery in Franconia and the third in Germany was founded here in 1127. Construction of the current magnificent monastery building began in 1687 to a design by JL Dientzenhofer, and was completed in the 18th century by JB Neumann and others. Construction of the monastery church began in 1200 (consecrated in 1285), and was given a Baroque style by Materno Bossi at the end of the 18th century.
