A figure in the Old Testament. Known as Joshua in the Roman Catholic Church and the Greek Orthodox Church. He was from the tribe of Ephraim. He was the son of Nun and became Moses' attendant at a young age (Exodus 24:13, Numbers 11:28), and served as a spy during the invasion of Canaan (Numbers 13:1-8). His name was originally Hosea, and Joshua, a shortened form of Jehoshua, was given to him by Moses. He was chosen as Moses' successor during his lifetime (Exodus 27:18-23), and after his death he became the leader of Israel, occupied Canaan, and distributed it to the 12 tribes. He himself obtained the land of Ephraim, died at the age of 110, and was buried in Timnath-serah, in the mountains of Ephraim (Joshua 24:29).
