At the eastern end of Pharos stood a large stone lighthouse (completed around 279 BC, by Sōstratos) about 110 meters high, which was counted as one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, but it collapsed in 1326, and the 15th century fortress of Qait Bay now stands there.
