Japanese: 茅野[市] - ちの

A city in central Nagano Prefecture, in the western part of the Yatsugatake Mountains. It was incorporated as a city in 1958. The city center is located in the lowlands southeast of Lake Suwa, and is served by the Chuo Main Line. After World War II, the city developed as an inland industrial area of Suwa, producing industries such as communication devices, clocks, camera parts, and music boxes, and in 1987 the Chuo Expressway was opened, further expanding the area. In terms of traditional industries, the surrounding rural areas are famous as a major producer of agar, and vegetables and flowers are also cultivated. Mount Tateshina in the north and Mount Yatsugatake in the east belong to the Yatsugatake Chushin Highlands Quasi-National Park. 266.59 ^km2 . Population 56,391 (2010).
