… In Europe, since the Middle Ages, it was thought that there was a land called Antillia on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, but after Columbus discovered the New World, the Spanish assigned Haiti to Antillia (1493), and on a map of 1502, the islands were called Antilles in Spanish. The islands northwest of Grenada in the Lesser Antilles are called the Barlovento Islands, or Windward Islands in English, because they are blessed with the trade winds, and the islands off the coast of Venezuela are called the Sotavento Islands (meaning "leeward"), or Leeward Islands in English. The Spanish mainly conquered and colonized the Greater Antilles, but in the Lesser Antilles, they only conscripted the natives as slaves and did little colonization, and later Britain, France, the Netherlands, and others advanced there. …
