Songkhla (English spelling)
A town on the east coast of the Malay Peninsula in southern Thailand. The capital of Songkhla Province. As a good port at the entrance to the Gulf of Thailand, it has long been a center of coastal trade, attracting Indian and Arab merchants. It flourished under the Srivijaya Dynasty (8th to 13th centuries) and was called Singkhon. It later changed its name to Singola, and adopted its current name during the Sukhothai Dynasty. There was constant conflict with Burma and other countries on the Malay Peninsula, but at the end of the 18th century, King Rama I drove out Burma and became Thai territory. It is also the place where Japanese troops landed before their surprise attack on Hawaii in World War II. It produces rice, copra, groundnuts, and tin. Freshwater fishing is also thriving in Luang Lagoon. Population: 84,738 (1986 estimate).

タイ南部,マレー半島東岸にある町。ソンクラー県の県都。タイ湾の出入口にある良港として,古くからインド,アラブの商人が訪れ,沿岸交易の中心となる。シュリービジャヤ朝 (8~13世紀) のもとで栄え,シンコン Singkhonと呼ばれた。その後シンゴラ Singolaなどに名前を変え,スコータイ朝のときに現在名となった。ビルマやマレー半島の諸国との間に抗争が絶えなかったが,18世紀末ラーマ1世がビルマを駆逐してタイ領となった。第2次世界大戦で日本軍がハワイ奇襲に先立って上陸した地点でもある。米,コプラ,ラッカセイのほかスズを産する。またルーアン潟湖では淡水漁業が盛ん。人口8万 4738 (1986推計) 。
