Songkhla (English spelling)

Japanese: ソンクラー(英語表記)Songkhla
Songkhla (English spelling)
A town on the east coast of the Malay Peninsula in southern Thailand. The capital of Songkhla Province. As a good port at the entrance to the Gulf of Thailand, it has long been a center of coastal trade, attracting Indian and Arab merchants. It flourished under the Srivijaya Dynasty (8th to 13th centuries) and was called Singkhon. It later changed its name to Singola, and adopted its current name during the Sukhothai Dynasty. There was constant conflict with Burma and other countries on the Malay Peninsula, but at the end of the 18th century, King Rama I drove out Burma and became Thai territory. It is also the place where Japanese troops landed before their surprise attack on Hawaii in World War II. It produces rice, copra, groundnuts, and tin. Freshwater fishing is also thriving in Luang Lagoon. Population: 84,738 (1986 estimate).
