A term used ambiguously in the Roman era. It was used to refer to people who lived in places that were not their own, and in the first half of the Empire, it usually meant tenants. During the colonate system at the end of the Empire, some farm workers who were tied to the land were given this name, along with colonus, but there are various theories about their actual situation.
